Kurtz On Crime

Interview with Rosalie Decatur

Recorded July 21, 2022, 12:12 p.m.

Goody Point, Maine

Interview conducted by Eva Kurtz and transcribed in its entirety for posterity.

Eva Kurtz (EK): We are back today with Rosalie Decatur. Thank you, Rosalie, for joining us again.

Rosalie Decatur (RD): Thank you for having me. (lowering voice) I feel stupid for saying that. Was that stupid?

EK: No, you’re fine. We probably won’t use this intro stuff anyway. We’ll cut out and use the snippets that actually tell the story the best.

RD: Okay.

EK: (pause) Are you ready to get started?

RD: No. I mean, yes. Sorry.

EK: You’re sure?

RD: I’m sure, yes.

EK: Okay. Rosalie, when we last left off, you had described walking through the parking lot at The Silver Dollar. You described being hit on the head and being unconscious. When you awoke, you found yourself in the back of a van. The van eventually came to a stop at — you described it as some sort of barn?

RD: Yes. I think it was a barn. Maybe more like… a shed? It wasn’t too big, there were no stalls for animals or anything like that. So I’m not sure what you would call it.

EK: You said you don’t know how long you drove for but… was it still dark when you arrived?

RD: Yes! It was.

EK: Good. So you didn’t drive for hours, then.

RD: No. If I had to guess, I’d say we drove for maybe less than an hour.

EK: Okay — that’s really good. Since you knew you were in the back of a van, can I assume you were not blindfolded, then?

RD: No, you’re right, I wasn’t. It was dark in the back of the van, but I could see enough to make out what it was.

EK: And when you arrived at this barn or shed… can you describe exactly what happened? The man must have come around to open the back door of the van?

RD: He did. I just remember sort of… cowering. At the back of the van. I should have tried to kick him and run away but I was so scared that I just froze.

EK: I think that’s perfectly reasonable. You did what you had to do to stay alive.

RD: I guess.

EK: Did you see his face at all?

RD: Not really. I guess I didn’t want to see it then. I just hid my face. Maybe it was some sort of glitch in the prey instinct — it’s like I thought that if I couldn’t see him, he couldn’t see me.

EK: And you didn’t want to see him. Because whoever he was, he couldn’t be a good man if he was doing this to you.

RD: Exactly. You read these stories about women who fight back, who scratch their attacker to get DNA even when they know they’re going to die… these courageous women. (pause) I was not courageous.

EK: You were a teenager. I think surviving was courageous. I think escaping was courageous. I think what you’re doing right now, reliving this in the hopes that it can help save another young woman, is courageous.
